Turmeric is a well-known, deep yellow-staining, ancient spice traditionally used in flavoring Indian and other Asian foods. What really makes Turmeric interesting is its historical use as a beneficial treatment for many health issues. Turmeric contains anti-inflammatory properties that have made it a staple in many cultures for centuries, with dozens of uses beyond cooking.

How is turmeric Used for Medical Purposes?

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Turmeric contains Curcumin, which gives Turmeric anti-inflammatory properties used for centuries in Indian and Chinese medicine. Though not yet FDA approved, this fact alone has earned Turmeric a legitimate place to be scientifically investigated for the treatment of many healthcare maladies, including infections, arthritis, allergies, and skin issues.

How is Turmeric Beneficial to the Skin?

Turmeric has been known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties for hundreds, even thousands of years. This has led Asian cultures to rely on its use for conditions caused by inflammatory issues such as dermatitis, eczema, acne, and other health related conditions. Many skin issues are caused by inflammation so it makes sense that a product that naturally contains anti-inflammatory properties could be used to generally benefit our skin.

What Could Turmeric Do for the skin?

Many cosmetic companies such as Kiehl, Neutrogena, Andalou, Nars, Clarins and Lush, have been actively delving into the business of promoting Turmeric infused ingredients for many types of skincare products. Masks, cleansers, serums, hydrating moisturizers, and supplements are now being advertised as containing anti-inflammatory properties capable of soothing redness, brightening, healing inflammation, and imparting a radiant glow.

Cosmetic research has shown Turmeric to be a soothing, promising, and beneficial treatment ingredient for many skin products.
